September 2007

We were so inspired by feng shui expert Alice Inoue’s advice on dressing with intention, we went out into the stores at Aloha Tower Marketplace to find new ways to do this and infuse new energy into our wardrobes. Here, you will find our interpretation of Alice’s tips with some of the season’s offerings at our mall.

If you want to get a chart listing the five personality archetypes and specific dress recommendations, you need to come to First Fashion Friday on September 7, 6 p.m. (No handouts will be available online or by email.)

Water

Calm and cool: If you want to be more creative or deep thinking, dress with artistic style. Dark tones, unexpected fabrications, and a flowing, abstract flair will bring out the philosopher in you. From left:

  • Grey cropped pants with pinstripes from Honolua Surf Co.
  • LL silver/cream sheer lace top available at Island Style Attitudes
  • Denim halter dress with floral, raised velour and sheer skirt from Crazy Fish
  • Black satin dress with fur trim, by Mystic, available at Pipe Dreams
  • Sandals by Nicky Shoe Company

Wood

Going, growing, gone: If you enjoy active environments and are attracted to competitive go-getters, dress with athletic-inspired pieces in blues and greens. Natural fabrics, pants, and ribbed, stretchy textures give you the comfort you need to move as quickly as your thoughts. From left:

  • Green block print dress from Pipe Dreams
  • Army Pink blue hoodie from Island Style Attitudes
  • Crystal/pearl necklace from Three Wishes in Paradise
  • D’Core jeans from Island Style Attitudes
  • Cotton/chiffon dress from Crazy Fish
  • Shoes by Nicky Shoe Company

Fire

Blaze of glory: Bolder fashion statements with reds and purples bring out the fire that burns within. Bring more fun into your life with flamboyant styles, furry or shiny textures, and pointed or angular shapes. As Blaine Ashley noted last month, animal prints are in for fall, perfect for the pleasure seeker. From left:

  • Red and white halter cocktail dress from Crazy Fish
  • Baby Phat animal print capris from Precious Boutique
  • Red/purple furry purse from Three Wishes in Paradise
  • Mock crocodile case from Nicky Shoe Company
  • Denise Tjarks reversible bag in mod print from Three Wishes in Paradise
  • Love Amore “Fire” tank top from Island Style Attitudes
  • Cotta G metallic halter dress/tunic from Pipe Dreams

Earth

Well-grounded: The more domesticated caregivers can reflect their nurturing souls with traditional fashion elements. Go for classic, conservative styles in basic pieces, especially in brown, yellow, and earthy tones. Note that “conservative” doesn’t have to mean “stuffy” with these pieces! From left:

  • Honolua Wahine “Jane” peasant shirt in mustard from Honolua Surf Co.
  • Elements long tank top with braided double straps from Honolua Surf Co.
  • Denise Tjarks reversible printed bag with bamboo handle from Three Wishes in Paradise
  • Honolua Wahine “Dharma” jumper, mustard color, from Honolua Surf Co.
  • Vanilla Sugar yoga pants from Island Style Attitudes

Metal

Polished perfection: Elegance and refinement are manifested through whites, pastels, and metallics. Wear luxurious fabrics that exude a curvy silhouette, upscale designer styling, and rounded shapes. Top this look off with black pearls to attract more quality-seekers. From left:

  • Bronze bag from Nicky Shoe Company
  • Dollhouse rhinestone thong slides from Island Style Attitudes
  • American One metallic/cream dress from Precious Boutique
  • Aryeh black/gray/white satin tunic from Precious Boutique
  • Nanette Lepore cream lace dress from Precious Boutique
