What to wear in our neck of the woods

The trend for accessories is hard to pin down this season—do you go with dainty, or chunky? Textured or glossy? This fall, just about anything goes, depending on how you feel each day. Here, we dug through the jewelry boxes of the store managers at Aloha Tower Marketplace to find the hottest ice this season.

Chunky: “If you go with chunky styles, go as big as possible,” says Mele Moses of Honolua Surf Company. “You can have one big, bold pendant, or a whole necklace of eye-catching links.” Van Ko of Precious Boutique agrees—“Large, graphic pendants worn with conservatively-cut tops help to show them off.”

Colors: “Bright accessories add a splashy statement to the traditional fall fabrics. Blocks of color really pop against gray tweeds and black knits,” says Thao “Nicky” McGill of Nicky Shoes. Across the way at Crazy Fish, a vast array of necklaces in varying lengths and color capture this trend.

Versatility: Jason Chang of Pipe Dreams finds that long chains that can be twisted into a tiered look or doubled up into a chunky choker are very popular this season. “One necklace can be worn with different outfits to create totally different looks,” he says.

Materials: “Acrylics add a splash of flash to any outfit, even a T-shirt,” says Island Style Attitudes owner Eun Mi Chung. “Big, clear acrylic necklaces are the most popular, but the more daring women try the colored styles.”

Originality: When in doubt, go with an original, custom piece. “I make many of my own pieces, which stand out at a party,” says Imperial Gallery owner Joy Li. “I have a wide range available in my store.” Three Wishes in Paradise carries original pieces by “Kimmy,” made with glass, semi-precious stones, and wire designs. These are so popular, they can hardly keep up with demand.

When it comes to accessories, the only rule to follow is to experiment and never limit yourself.  Think of how the whole mood of an outfit can be altered with jewelry (a thin gold chain versus a strand of blue acrylic pearls, or shells versus bone) and accessorize according to your mood.
