Inspiration in a Lipstick

If your space could use a makeover but the very idea leaves you feeling insecure and unmotivated, you need some inspiration. Why not take what you already know and love and apply it to your space?
So ladies, grab your makeup bag! When you’re getting ready for a hot night out, you know that scarlet lipstick and dark eyeliner are just the ticket. And don’t forget your accessories—it’s a given that a little gold bling will make the gold in those cute new sandals sparkle even more!
A makeover for your space can be just as easy. Here are some tips to add just the right touch of pizzazz:
Bring on the color. Chocolate brown has been in vogue for a while now, and it’s going to be around for a lot longer. But instead of pairing it with tans and neutrals and playing it safe, why not choose bold splashes of color? Try a vibrant orange, pink or blue—even gray can work wonders in a room. Where do you put these splashes? On an accent wall, in artwork, picture frames, vases, accessories, throws, planters. Accent colors add contrast, drama and an immediate wow factor.
Captivate your hands and eyes. If you have a boring beige sofa, add some interest with a creative or interesting texture. Faux fur is fun. Sisal would work if you have an Island theme. And don’t overlook pattern! If you’re going more Asian and can’t find the right pillows, go to a fabric store. Find an interesting Oriental pattern and make the covers yourself or have them made—it’s inexpensive and will add interest, color and texture.
Style with shape. Do you have an ordinary square coffee table? Why not change it out for a round or rectangular leather ottoman that you can put a sturdy tray on for drinks, plants or accessories? Another idea: try a geometric cube or two or an Asian lacquered trunk, or even a pair of colorful round Chinese garden stools. Creative ‘coffee tables’ are a great way to make statements with color, texture and shape.
Let it shine. Chrome, satin nickel, acrylic, crystal beads—if any of these elements puts a smile on your face, why not add it to your space? Chrome candlesticks, crystal beads in your lamp base, whimsical accessories—just remember that whatever elements you put in, don’t have just one: repeat those elements at least a couple more times around the room to make it feel unified.
By incorporating a few of these touches, your space will look as good as you do when you are getting ready for that amazing night out on the town!
